Operation Weight Loss Risk of Blindness - K
According to a report published by the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, a woman who has just turned in his 40s, had visited a clinic ophthalmology in Texas after he suffered a disruption in the eye in the form of eye pain that does not go away until the appearance of lesions in the eye.

"The symptoms are the effects of a severe vitamin A deficiency," said Kyle Kirkland, a medical student at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and lead author of the study.

Vitamin A plays an important role in eye health, and a deficiency can cause severe dryness of the eyes, night blindness, and the lesion is called "" Bitot spot "" formed on the surface of the eye, said Kirkland.

However, vitamin A deficiency is severe enough actually very rare, because it is fairly easy to get enough vitamins from food, Kirkland said.

After doing further analysis, it was found that the cause of the woman due to vitamin A deficiency is the result of weight loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery.

In a certain type of weight loss surgery known as "" duodenal switch "", carried out by taking the front end of the small intestine (called the duodenum) and connect it to the rear of the small intestine.

The small intestine alone is where nutrients in food is absorbed into the body, so as to shorten the length of the small intestine, it is expected to decrease the amount of calories and nutrients are absorbed from food, Kirkland said.

Although surgery has been proven to help the cause of weight loss, but on the other hand are also very likely to significantly decrease the absorption of vitamins, including vitamin A, according to the report.

Before the surgery, the woman has been informed that vitamin deficiency is a common side effect after surgery, so that taking a multivitamin can prevent things related to vitamin deficiency can be prevented.

But according to Kirkland, multivitamins alone is not enough to keep someone from vitamin A deficiency conditions are severe.

"This case is the second report related to the occurrence of eye disease as a result of weight loss surgery," said Kirkland.

To treat vitamin A deficiency, the woman had been given intravenous (IV) vitamin and it has been reported that symptoms and vision problems have improved.

However, the authors note that in order to prevent eye disease coming back, the woman should receive infusions of vitamin A until he could undergo another surgery to reshape his intestines in order fix the problem permanently.
